Diodes still do have surge current ratings...while they may be better than
diodes from antiquity, they still have limits.
I think I've seen some 1A plastic body diodes that had 30 A single cycle
current rating, for reference.
As Mariss pointed out, there is probably a NTC thermistor in each and
everyone on your computer power supplies.
