Promoting cheapness in homebrew slides

OK, like everyone else, I'd prefer a good set of slides in my
homemade router. I'd even be happy with mediocre slides. Got me to
thinking about something I saw on some homemade telescope mounts that
involved teflon pucks on various materials.
I'm thinking about rails made of Melamine coated board (suitably
braced) with teflon pucks on the gantry/carriage. No rolling, all
sliding. I've got a layout in mind that provides for complete
constraint and which will avoid binding.
But has anyone tried a dry sliding system at all?
