Smoke & others:
(Smoke, I'd be glad to quote on your prototype
parts when you get the material ready, dim's
finalized, etc.)
How many have heard the "blanket order" pitch?
I don't think the lack of money or desire to pay
reasonable prices can't be pinned on inventor types.
Large corps can be the worst, cheap, weasels to
deal with. One of my favorite's is the
"quote 50pcs ASAP". Then wait 2-3? weeks (maybe
months till the material price is no good) and
finally a call...."We need 5 right NOW! Can we
get those at the 50 pc price"??
I quoted some other parts recently as a result of my
mention of job shop capabilities on this group.
Quantity on one part was 2pc, "Need it now".
After a phone call to discuss some details, I gave
the price for 2 pieces. Admitidly, it was a costly
part, the hours add up. My hourly rate was (I thought)
reasonable at $38hr. Ok,anyway, now it changes to
10,25 & 50pcs. NO problem. Another phone call with
those prices.
Here it comes... "Well, ok, but for now, can we get
just 2 on a "blanket order" (I love that line) of 10?
Sure! Anytime, but (understand) you have to BUY & pay
for all 10pcs,now, or it's just 5 (2)piece orders.
They can sit on MY shelf or YOURS as long as YOU
paid the labor & material fees for the LARGER
quantity.
There is no "special math" that takes place with
larger
quantites spread over time.
This game playing wastes my valuable time.
