2.5D allows the movement of the z-axis via computer control. Even if you do
not want to do 3-D shapes it is still convenient to have the ability to
automatically set and change the depth at which the tool cuts, and to move
it off the surface for rapid positioning. There has been extensive
discussions on the differences between 2.5D and 3D so if you want those
distinctions you could check the archive (although I am still unclear).
