First, on the versatile, open, black box - yes, yes! I may not agree
with where you want to draw the line, but it should be fun to play
with the various methods.

Second, on intergrated motor/drive/powersupply combos - there are two
big advantages: 1 - your lawyers are more likley to let you get by
without an isolation transformer since all the motor wiring is self
contained and you can take care of things like proper isolation of the
motor wires from the grounded shell. 2 - the user can't mess up the
motor wiring, the encoder cable is less likely to fail, etc. Of
course these may not overwhelm the disadvantages.
