There are many different inkjet technologies. Ultra high-speed
continuos jet printheads are always on and use electrostatic
deflection to aim the droplets onto the paper or into a recycling
catch tube when nothing is to be printed. These are often used to
print on cartons, address junk mail, etc.

Drop on demand jets use a tiny resistor to boil off the ink and fire
it at the page - they are typically fied aim but often built in arrays
of many jets (like 40 or more). This is more the kind of thing you
find in a desktop inkjet printer.

Of course there are many other related technologies as well.
