About a year ago, I bought win4lin to run Vector on my Linux box. It
worked very well. I was amazed at how fast windows booted up and how
well it worked. Since then, a lot of other things have gone on and I
haven't kept up with win4lin. I tend to be a slash and burn OS guy. I
try one system and then move on to the next. Currently I am typing this
from an Apple Cube running OS X. But right next to this machine is my
Win98/Redhat7.2 machine wich has Wine and Vector on it. Vector will run
under Wine, but there are some problems (related to Wine). You can run
the CAD/CAM drawing editor part of the program, but not the NC CAM
editor. That means you can draw but not generate code with it yet.
But, I am amazed that it works as well as it does. Wine has come a
long way over the years. I can run Rhino3D with it, but at a much
slower speed.
I have moved across the country this last year and am just now setting
up my shop. The new plan is to run EMC on all my cnc equipment in the
garage and windows98 on my CAD/CAM computer. My Apple Cube will be used
for the internet and just general unix stuff. I will have 2 seperate
networks in the house, one for the internet and one for the machines. I
don't want to take any chances with script kiddies running my CNCs.
