Couple of reasons, but let's keep it simple: The "house wire" is strung out
in a line, so any heat will be unnoticeably-dissipated.

If wound up in a coil in a transformer, not only the current through the
copper, but the MAGNETIC stress contribute to heating. Besides, you don't
want the VOLTAGE-DROP you'd experience with "double" the current in the
winding. Third reason: Long years of experience by white-haired, bearded
old wizards that "do that"!
