bridgeport boss and gecko drive help - please

Greetings,
i have a desire to remove the original controller from my series 1
boss 5 bridgeport. from what i can gather it is possible to use a
gecko drive with my existing motors and power supplies. is this
correct?. i have a bad axis card and really don't feel like spending
money on older technology if i can upgrade to a p.c. controller.
has anybody accomplished this? if so do you feel like "holding my
hand thru this"?
any considerations given this request will be geatly appreciated.
