Model Engineer's Workshop #62 has a very good article on shop DROs. This
issue is devoted to sensors, the next issue details readouts. One
interesting type of scale that I wasn't aware of is a flexible wire
wrapped around a drum, connected to a rotary encoder. You connect on end
of the wire to the stage you want to move around and it's supposed to be
good to within 0.002 inches. The commercial manufacturer is B&K but the
author shows a homebuilt prototype also. It has the advantage that it
can be easily moved between systems.
