This raises a question I've been mulling over, but haven't done anything
about:
If you could make a nice swarf/coolant/dust proof optical tube and mount
it on your tool, you could pretty much make an interferometer and use it
as the encoder for a DRO. It would take a lot of tweaking, and would be
sensitive as all get-out to vibration (not sure how to fix that yet), but
it would work.
This is how grating ruling engines have been indexed for decades (over a
century?) Any thoughts on adapting existing DRO boards to use one of
these beasties?
I don't mind designing optics. It's the electronics what scare me.
