Good afternoon! The 5V rating simply means if you were to apply 5VDC
to the motor coil, 3A of current will flow thru it.
You would not operate the motor from a 5VDC supply though, the
performance would be simply miserable. Normally your power supply
voltage would be many times higher, up to a maximum of 20 times the
motor's rated voltage, or 100VDC.
The drive operates as a current source, in this case 3A.
A current source is a mirror image of a voltage source. A voltage
source maintains its voltage whether the load draws 0 amps or 10
amps. A current source maintains a constant current into a load
whether the voltage across the load is 0V or 100V.
Step motors must be driven by current sources and that is what step
motor drives do. The higher the supply voltage is the faster the
motor can go.
