BDI question by BDU

Hi!

BDU stands for brain dead user ;-)

Well, to get more specific, I had zero experience with Linux and had no
intetntion to learn it in near future. With BDI with EMC was to tempting to
just look at it... So a friend downloaded the BDI for me (he lan conection,
I am on dialup woth 56K....) and burned it for me on a CD. Instalation is
straight forward, yes id does remove all MS Virus (tm) progs for you and you
have a clean start.
New enviroment brought new questions and tricks. I quickly learned not to
doubleclick on icons (was rewarded with second window too many times ;-)
The machine I have is pentium 133 with 64 megs of ram, the display is in
800x600 256 colors and is quite happy with Linux.
Now to EMC: the bdi gives you four icons on your desktop:emc_generic (usualy
one of 300.000 Bbridgeport's suitable for retrofit), emc_mini (usualy hobby
machine with steppers and no limit switches), emc_run (I don't know what to
use thise one for) and emc_sim (used to run simulation with EMC Backplot)
I have a four axis stepper controller (l297/298), which is working fine (was
tested on another system) connected to LPT 1 and hawe tried to work with
emc_mini. I found, that for each icon on desktop there is a run script and
ini file. I edited mini.ini file with text editor. I changed it to metric,
made treavels for each axis bigger and shotrened the popup screen time from
10 to 1 second
The motors still behave strange.
Well after a few tries I found that the changes I am doing to mini.ini are
not reflected in bahaviour of emc_mini when up and running.
Does anyone now how filenames are organised? Which icon is conected to which
run to which ini? As beeng linux novice I don't know the linux commands,
file organization and so on...
I can also run the emc only as root, as normal user nothin happenes (evan if
I doubleclick on icon ;-)))
Any clue or sample ini file for similare setup would be greatly appriciated!

Matjaz

PS: My compliments to creators of EMC! This is what everyobody will benifit
from!
