Chris,
I have looked inside a lot of pen plotters and all that I have seen to date
use servomotors with encoders. Some have more common (1000 line) encoders
than others (4xx line). In general, I would expect to leave the encoder
attached to the motor for mechanical support even though the motor would not
be powered. The bigger question is has anyone figured out how to use the
LCD display and any of the mechanical timing pulleys, belts and
electronics/display to make a DRO.
