by a single A3977 aren't even sync'd with each other, much less with

This is not necessarily a bad thing. I think that the primary reason
for syncing multiple axes is so that false-triggering of one chip
will not be caused by the swiching of another chip. I assume that
the A3977 is immune or at least resistant to this problem.
