XYZ TABLE

Has anyone tried building a XYZ table just using cold rolled rectangle
steel one inch squared and have 1,250 diameter radial ball bearings
roll on the cold rolled rails? The bearings would be on top and the
sides with one bearing per side spring loaded to compensate for
unparellelisium. This is great for a large span of travel instead
of fixed bearings. Or am i just re inventing the WHEEL? If the
bearings were free, is that better than buying liniear bearings and
doing a job that could last 100 times longer?
