They were designed to be run as hard as they were run. Meaning, the
machine was designed to run all day long and stepper motors get hot.

fine on chopper drives as long as the motor is in good shape.

fine without the heat sinks. If you have to go through the expense of
replacing the motors consider putting on servos with some Gecko G320/340
drives. You performance will be much better than the steppers. I know, I
had a bad motor on Bridgett (my Bridgeport series II).
