Hi Brian,
You might put the steppers on each end of the lead screw. If you drive
them with a switching unipolar driver instead of an L/R driver, and use
a higher voltage, you might be able to realize the full torque out of
the motors.
Or try to find #23's, they are often available for a few dollars each
anyway.
