Backlash, ballscrews, etc

greetings,
I have a Grizzly G1008 milling machine I am in the process of
convering to CNC. It is not a "bridgeport" size mill, but nor is it
a "mill/drill." It has an 8"x30" table with 16" knee. It is similar
to Enco 100-5201.
The x-axis has about 7 mil backlash, the y-axis has 2 mil backlash.
Im not sure what the backlash of the z-axis is. The bronze leadscrew
nuts are "slotted" so as to be adjustable. The leascscrews are .785"
dia and 8 TPI.
Will this much backlash give satisfactory results with a stepmotor
system ? Do I need to convert the mill to a better technology
leadscrew system ? Does anyone make off the shelf low backlash
conversions for my mill ?
Thanks in advance for any help
Reed
