lathe controller requirements

Hi,

I asked this question at other groups, but am hoping for more
response.

Can one use any old controller program which can control 2/more axes
as a lathe controller?

Hoping to hear about the experience of those who have a hobby CNC
lathe who uses a simple controller program for their lathe versus
those who uses more specialised (adapted for lathe work) controllers.

Just like to see if I can get away with using ultra-low cost hobby
controller for my CNC lathe (no chips produced yet) but will like to
know what I'll be missing.
