Router Question

I see that some moving-gantry machines have a long gantry supported
at either end by two short rails on the other XY axis while others
have two long rails supporting a shorter gantry by its ends. Whats
the pro and cons of either approach ? The first approach uses less
total length of materials but is the latter approach more rigid ?
