Well, in theory, you can do this. But, if you are going to be experimenting
with EMC, you need a pretty decent development environment, since the
package is distributed as C and C++ source. I was not able to put together
the full development environment in 650 MB, but made it work in 1 GB.
I just saw new, 4.2 GB IDE drives going for $89!
