As long as a "dummy" e-mail is at the top of the list, any new mail will not open automatically.
THEN you can just click and drag any message into the trash without opening it. (click on the little mail/letter icon to do this)

I too have occasional spurts where CCED group messages ignore my filter and end up in my Inbox instead of the filter rule. Wierd. I do not think I have been missing any posts via E-mail though.
Still, I have been thinking of just reading on the (equally challenging) Yahoo site directly at least until I can get mozilla filters to work like my old 4.7x ones.
