I think you may be going about this the hard way. If you want to
engrave a bitmap you probably would be ahead to stick with a program
that will let you create a gcode file from the bitmap. It operates
sort of like a halftone screen that breaks a picture into a series of
small dots. Printers have been doing it for decades. The concept is
that a bitmap to gcode program will turn the picture in a series
of "pecks" using a v bit that will create the picture into the
material.

Trying to turn a bitmap to a vector of a photo is never going to give
you something that is very usable. (unless you like abstract art)
Seems to me that Master5 will take a bitmap and turn it into gcode
(Art?) and Vector (Fred?)has a package that does that as well. Both
of those solutions are affordable for the hobby world. There is also
higher end packages like ArtCam (big$$) that have a seperate piece to
convert photos into engravings. There are others I have missed so if
any of the group wants to chime in, go for it!
