Power Supply Sizing

I am going to use the Xylotex driver board (2.5 amp) with 3 powermax II stepper motors rated at 2.3 amps series/4.6 amps parallel and a 24 volt supply. From this I think I will need to wire series for best performance. The Geckodrive white papers state that I will use less than 1/3 of the motor's rated current when wired series. For 3 motors this comes up to 2.3 amps total. This does not seem like enough current to drive this system. Am I missing something? I also wonder if anyone has found that it is sometimes cheaper to buy a smaller supply for each motor rather than a single supply for all three motors.
