It would be quite easy to program a PIC that took in the step and direction
signals from an unused axis and output a PWM signal. What I am thinking is
that you drive the "axis" in one direction to increase the speed and in the
other to decrease it. Think of it just like you were driving a motorized pot
with that axis. The PIC would then continue to put out the PWM signal at the
commanded duty cycle until you move the axis and then it would change.
