Larry, no one seems to have mentioned the Emco-Maier range of
machines. They go from the tiny Unimat on up to about whatever
you want. Made in Austria and have a pretty good reputation, at
least for their Mill-Drill. Blue Ridge Machinery sells them. I
don't own any machine made by Emco-Maier so can only relate what
I've heard. The Taig, Sherline and Prazi lathes all seem to
small to me, as does the Unimat. It appears the next size up in
a quality machine would be the 5" Emco.
