I've got a nice kit built horizontal, bought it used already built. I've
thought a couple of times about changing it into a cnc, but the up and down
on the knee would be a major pain to redo. It works great for setting up a
group of shell mills and cutting a shape or squaring 2-3 sides at once, but
doing "normal" mill work in it means setting the part up side ways and using
the knee up down feed as the Y axes. I really don't think knee is strong
enough to do a good job of it.

I'm sure it's not un-do-able, using a vertical just seems a lot easer.
On the good hand, the horizontal does tend to do a better job at chip
removal and as a boring mill it's hard to beat a horizontal. (although
circle interp has kinda killed boring...)
