These strips are 150 lines per inch, so you can get 600 counts per inch
out of the assembly in quadrature.
While this is an easy assembly to convert for use as a DRO, I would
suggest keeping an eye out for old Deskjet/Deskwriter 500 series
machines. They are starting to wear out about now, and are frequently
simply tossed out.
They use a servo motor with a 500 CPR encoder on the back of them. The
whole assembly - motor, belt, far side tensioner, roller, slide - can be
removed as an assembly and maybe used as a higher resolution DRO.
