retrofit for an older milling machine (index vintage 1965)

im looking for help/ info on stepper or servo type conversions
i plan on replacing the acme with ballscrews. I found a lot of links
on cnc.The machine is in great shape. will the home brew type of cnc
retrofit work ok? gecko drives, steppers and a pc with inexpsensive
nc software
