Sounds like you have the fever.
many of us started while looking at an old disk drive.
you can find stepper driver circuits that will power your mini-motors.
free software, and if you just want to start, you can make an economy-
engraver. not very much power at all. could easily use a pen to
draw circuit boards, or cut foam, or just possibly cut some balsa
wood.
