This is in response to:
I'm finally making chips with my cnc mill, but not much more.
I have a 2.5 inch connecting rod that I'm cutting out of the middle
of a .375 T6061 AL plate. The rod gets marred up / damaged during
the final cut. Are there any suggestions / techniques to prevent
this?
I will cut a base plate flat and super glue the stock to it....Yes
super glue!! Use a piece of stock large enough to clear the clamps with
cutter cutting the full shape also cut the stock flat first. Rough the part
down leaving about .005 on the sides and .020 from breaking through in Z.
The finial cut take it slow cutting the last .005 off the sides and cutting
it free in Z at the same time. After the finish cut remove outside clamps
holding down the slug then tap part on the side with soft mallet to break
free. I have used this method many times with great Luck but be careful!.
This works great in place of a vacuum chuck for small sheet pieces too.
