a big old Van Norman horiz./vert. mill. We used a #50 taper adapter and
welded it to a blank slightly larger than the backplate on a chuck.

I once made a faceplate about 18" in dia which went directly on spindle
nose of a Cincinnati hor #50 mill; it piloted on the spindle OD, bolted up
on four holes that were in end of the spindle, and drove thru the same
keys as drove the tool holders. I used it to handle work up to 24" square
and 10" thick. The mill was quite happy to be used as a big lathe, but the
other machinists had strokes.
