Tuning servo motors and Gecko 320 drivers on mill....

on 2003-02-27 19:44:18 UTC
I've finally gotten my Taig mill and servos hooked up together and
running. I'm trying to tune the Gecko drivers and am looking for
suggestions. I've read the manual and I'm looking for some first
hand experience.

I have the Limit pot turned all the way up. The manual says unless
you have a real reason not to, to turn it up. That's what I did.

Gain and Damping. I've started from all the way down to all the way
up. Keeping both pots turned the same amount having not been able to
tell a real difference otherwise. Right now I've got them both about
a 1/4 turn down from all the way up. The only real difference I can
tell is the noise the motors make when at rest in position.

I've been able to make the drivers fault out by adding a load on the
table or headstock with my hand. Which adjustment would I use to fix
this? The only g-code I've run so far is some engraving in wood, so
that hasn't loaded up the machine at all.

The motors always go a little past the position and turn back.
Probably less than 1/4 thou. I can watch them and tell the slight
amount because the mill has the graduated indicator dials on the
ends of the leadscrews installed. If there is any backlash (most
likely) the table/headstock is always going to be this 1/4 thou or
so out of position, isn't it?

I'm running Mach1 and I've messed with the Velocity and Acceleration
settings, but can't really tell if it helps the positioning at all.
Right now I've got them both set at max.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Monte
