manual for EMC

Is there a beginner manual or tutorial for EMC?
I've been following this group for months, and after learning so much, I decided to give it a try, so I'm planning to start retrofitting a lathe.
But I need to make sure I can deal with the software before I start spending some money.
Please advise.

P.S. : I have no previous experience with Linux.
