spindle motor

Hi all,

I am fitting my drill press with a cnc downfeed and cross slide.

the $100.00 cross slides are in need of thrust bearings on the lead
screws. man, I can't believe they put an ACME thread against cast
iron with not bearings. yuch!

anyway, the drill press motor is not cutting it. 1/4 hp, and I think
capacator start. could be capacitor run? (could be hollow box where
a cap would be? cheap HF drill press)

anyway, I want to put on a larger motor. probably 1/2 hp as some of
the same basic model have 1/2 hp.

the question is what is the best motor ? I don't see needing speed
changes (today) so am not looking for extravagant stuff.

I have seen 3 phase off a power converter, cap-start-cap-run, PSC,
and DC. Which is best for this type of application ?

I am running into a noticable speed slow down on some heavy drilling
so I would like more power. And when I tap with it I can stall the
motor. (tapping head in the works to try to eleminate starting in a
thread)

I have a 1/3hp PSC motor that is physically more than twice the size
of the 1/4 hp that came with the drill press, but in the back of my
mind I thought PSC was a poor choice.
