Servo motor for lathe spindle

Cammers:
I have a nice converted Hardinge lathe and I was wondering about replacing
the headstock motor with a servo motor so I can do contouring, indexing,
etc. It seems that many "preowned" servo motors of any size are AC. I use
Geckos for the axis drives, but, they apparently can only drive DC motors. I
do not have an endless supply of cash, but I am willing to spend a little on
a decent setup. Suggestions anyone?
Thanks, Bill Box
