Modern stepper motor vs Bridgeport series I motor

As has been explained in recent posts, stepper motor performance has
improved in the past 20 years or so. So here's my question:
Using Gecko drivers, how much more torque/speed could be expected from a
Sanyo Denki motor compared with an original Series I Bridgeport motor (1983
vintage)?
Assume that the Gecko drivers are operated at their maximum recommended
voltage and current, and the Sanyo Denki motor is sized correctly.
If I can get a lot more speed just by changing motors, it might be a good
thing to do. If it doesn't double speed, then I'll just keep the original
motors.
Many thanks to all the motor experts out there.
