Z axis motor .. stepper or servo

I'm now reassembling the head of my Shoptask after having taken it
completely apart ( for bearing replacement and a few other mods ) and am
now thinking, always a dangerous condition.

I was just about to reinstall the servo motor ( run by a gecko G320 )
when it occurred to me that I maybe had a better use for this motor and
those electronics.

To digress, that would be a spindle motor for my Sherline, most of the
time run off a PWM DC supply, once in a while run off the Gecko to
allow me to thread things via CNC.

This machine used to use three powerful, if somewhat slow, steppers.

As I think about this, it seems to me that putting the stepper back on
the Z axis is not such a bad idea.

There's never been a case when I thought the stepper was too slow ( on
the Z axis anyway .. X and Y are a different story ) and the stepper
SHOULD have more torque for drilling and whatnot.

Aside from the extra work involved in rebuilding all the various
controllers, is there any reason NOT to do this ?

Thanks for any thoughts.
