[CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Machine Control Design

I need to design controls for a machine that will does the following:

1. Control the distance that a grinder head moves down a track. For
example,
it needs to move 60", then return and make another pass. Some parts are
longer
than the 60", therefore this distance can vary. The longest part is
140"

2. As the head makes another pass, it needs to move into the part to
remove more material. Would
a single axis with a stepper motor work?


I am using manual controls at this time, but would like to automate the
process. Would Turbocnc
work as software? I would like to have a detailed parts list or
possible purchase drivers, boards, etc.
from someone on this group. Also since this is a prototype, I would
like to keep costs to a minimum.
