As a fellow heretic, I can suggest the best bet is to visit a local
"computer flea market" if there is one nearby. I have picked up a number of
these machines for far less than $50. Thrift shops are another good source
as are garage sales, regular flea markets and the always reliable eBay.
My first exposure to CNC was during a visit to Continental Plastics Mfg. in
Oklahoma City. They had this incredibly automated machine operating at
fantastic speeds under the control of a "magic black box." Always curious,
I slipped around to the back side where I found the "black box" to be a
simple sheet metal shed for a Commodore VIC-20. The tour guide engineer
noted my astonishment and said something like: It really doesn't take much
computer power to run this stuff.
