Yes it can be done. TurboCNC currently implements thread cutting on a CNC
lathe by synchronizing the carriage movement with the spindle speed via
software. (http://www.dakeng.com). Mach2 (http://www.artofcnc.ca) will have
it soon.

There in lies a problem. Your probally going to have to sync the axis
drive to the spindle. This won't be cheap.
