If you are using magnets the inexpensive Hall effect sensors work well and
have a logic output.
available form DigiKey . Radio Shack has some very strong magnets about the
size of a kitchen match head.
They may even have the hall effect device. they are small 3 lead TO93
package.
you would need 5vdc and 1 4.7k resistor.
How do you want to read it?
