All depends on the TYPE of machine you are working on.
I have finished converting my Sherline lathe to CNC, and just now am I
getting to make chips. Sherline's web site has some good info on CNC
conversions and links to places to get the parts and so forth.
I thought this was going to be a tough job, but once through it, it was well
worth the effort
