I have a Mitutoyo DRO on my EMCO FB-2 mill. It has a total of 10 buttons on it
Four are for the X axis, and Four for the Y axis, one for IN/MM selection,
The last for POWER on/off.

The four buttons per axis are as follows:
1. ZERO, zeros the axis at the position you are at.
2. UP arrow, used in incrementing the count up when presetting a digit.
3. PRESET, used to preset the readout to a desired count. Push it once and
the least significant digit blinks, use the up arrow to increase the count,
press again to move to next digit Continue until finished setting desired
number for the location.
4. ABS/INC In the ABSolute mode the readout will show numbers from the last
zero position. If you change to INCrement you can move to a position, drill
or whatever, then zero and move to next position, drill or whatever, if you
then change back to ABSolute, the readout will show the total distance moved,
and ignore the zeroing while in the INCrement mode, show total distance
moved. This is a nice feature.

The one thing that is excellent about this unit is that it has a battery
backed up memory for the readings. Get called away from the machine for a
period of time, and turn it on, and the numbers are still there. Or a power
outage.
I feel that this is a necessity.
Maybe this will give some ideas for improvement on future designs.

It also has a feature of being able to correct for lead screw errors.
