Z axis with (2) opposing drives?

Just a quick question to the group about something that has been bugging me
on my mill cnc setup (not done yet)....my z axis spindle drive would have a
max of 2.5 inches, so I am wondering if it even has merit adding a drive to
it in lieu of using the knee alone for z axis travel on my full sized Van
Norman mill. Is it possible or even sensible to automate in control
software the use of both or either the knee or spindle drives for Z
movements? It doesn't look like an easy option from what I have seen so
far, but I am just new at this and am not yet up and running....should I
just use the knee and be done with it?
