RE: Lasers in the Shop

If Norm can have a laser on his miter saw, I can put one on my metalworking
equipment. I attached one of those cheap lasers to the head of my
mill/drill. Since these Asian machines do not have dovetail columns, you
lose position every time you raise or lower the head. The laser shines to a
mirror on a far wall, and bounces back to the front of the machine. So I
just put the spot in the same position after I change the head position. I
could get very good accuracy, except I just used a plain household mirror
and it is not too flat, causing errors, depending on where the laser hits
it. It was a fun project and I think with a little tweaking it will be a
nice feature.

I suspect there could be many good uses in the shop.
