JR Kerr pics, home brewing a servo driver

I have two small (and different) surplus DC brush servo motors needing
about 2 amps each. I also have two obsolete Allegro chips, A3951SW
Servo Driver IC. As well I have several rotary encoders which provide
direction and pulse info.

I am wondering how difficult it would be to put together an encoder
reader, and servo controller using JR Kerr's PICS for these purposes.
He does supply some typical application circuits on his website. But I
am sure that there is much more to know before designing and making
such a system. I know that years ago, Circuit Cellar Ink had an
article on this, stating it was possible, and discussing it in general
terms.

Has anyone done such a thing, or know where I could get information
from someone who has?

I know servo drivers are available for the right bucks, but I don't
have them to spend, and for such small motors, it would seem like
overkill anyway.
