Actually...
A severely undersized Filter Cap along with other factors,
such as loads, can overheat and loose it's juices.

Caps, especially Electrolytic have an internal resistance
that comes into play when filtering the AC component.
Normally this can be ignored, however, under certain
conditions, it needs to be part of the equation.

Electrolytics specifically designed for heavy filtering
will typically specify a lower internal resistance.

Excessive "A.C. Ripple" and a Hot Cap, is a sure sign of
the need for a larger size.
