Gear & Rack

I have an old stereo litho mapping table that has a X axis that
runs on a 1.5 dia. gear and 40"long geared rack. The thing was french
made & I can find very little on it for brand or make.
I would like to use it as a table(nice steel sheet with ball
bearings on the carrage.
I'm thinking that the gear & rack is to rough for cnc control, but
it was used for photografy?
Has anyone seen a set up like this? Can it be used, if so will it
be smooth or jog on every tooth?
